Sic Bo Basics
Before delving into strategies, it is worth taking a few moments to review the basics of the game. It really is very simple, you are just betting on what will happen when three dice are rolled. However, there are several different types of bet that you can place and it is important that you are familiar with all of them.
The basic bets are as follows:
- Big - The total score is between 11 and 17
- Small - The total score is between 4 and 10
- Odd - The total score will be an odd number
- Even - The total score will be an even number
- Specific Triples - A specific number will appear on all three dice
- Specific Doubles - A specific number will appear on at least two of the dice
- Three Dice Total - A bet on a specific total of the three dice
- Single Number Bet - Betting on a specific number appearing on at least one die
- Combination Bet - Betting that any two specific numbers will be rolled
After placing your bets, the dice are rolled and then you win if one of your bets comes through. While the game is simple, as shall be explored in the next section, there are a number of advanced strategies that you can use to try to improve your returns.
Sic Bo Strategies
Unfortunately, Sic Bo is ultimately a game of chance. There is nothing that you can do to influence what numbers appear on the dice and what happens in one round will have no bearing on what happens in any other. However, there are still strategies that can be employed to try to improve your winnings.
Low Risk Strategy
The first thing to remember is that just because a strategy is relatively low risk and simple to use, it doesn’t mean that it is basic. If you want to reduce your risk then there are two things you can do, bet smaller amounts and place the bets that have the smallest house edge. When it comes to Sic Bo, the bets with the smallest house edge are the Small, Big, and Combination.
The Small and Big bets both pay at 1:1, have a house edge of 2.78%, and a 47.62% chance of winning. The combination bet pays at 6:1, it has an even smaller house edge of 2.77%, and a massive 62.50% chance of winning. As such, these are the safest bets that you can place.
However, you shouldn’t just place them blindly. It is far better to combine them with some sort of betting system. One that has become particularly popular with Sic Bo players is the 1-3-2-4 system as it is easy to remember and use. The secret to the system is in its name. You start with a €1 bet, then move to a €3 bet, then €2 and finally €4. However, you should only move on to the next bet in the sequence after you have won a bet. If you lose, then you return to the start of the sequence.
The Big, Small and Combination bets can be used together with other betting systems, such as the Paroli and 1-3-2-6. While none of these systems will guarantee that you win, they will help to reduce your losses.
Alternative Strategy
The above strategy is low risk, but it also doesn’t offer the chance of huge winnings due to the nature of the bets involved. If you want the chance of big payouts, then you will need to be betting on at least four different numbers. Furthermore, even if you were to lose all four bets, there is a good chance of covering your losses when you do hit a win.
When choosing which numbers to bet on, it is important to consider the probability of each bet winning as well as the house edge. The table below shows you the different bets, the probability of winning, the payout and the house edge for each. It is vital that you familiarise yourself with this information.
Sic Bo Bet | Odds | Probability | Payout | House Edge |
4 | 70/1 | 1.59% | 62:1 | 12.43 % |
5 | 34/1 | 3.13% | 31:1 | 11.04% |
6 | 20/1 | 5.26% | 18:1 | 12.03% |
7 | 13/1 | 7.69% | 12:1 | 9.78% |
8 | 9/1 | 11.11% | 8:1 | 12.52% |
9 | 15/2 | 12.50% | 7:1 | 7.44% |
10 | 7/1 | 14.29% | 6:1 | 12.50% |
11 | 7/1 | 14.29% | 6:1 | 12.50% |
12 | 15/2 | 12.50% | 7:1 | 7.44% |
13 | 9/1 | 11.11% | 8:1 | 12.52% |
14 | 13/1 | 7.69% | 12:1 | 9.78% |
15 | 20/1 | 5.26% | 18:1 | 12.03% |
16 | 34/1 | 3.13% | 31:1 | 11.04% |
17 | 70/1 | 1.59% | 62:1 | 12.53% |
Double | 12/1 | 8.33% | 11:1 | 11.08% |
Triple | 216/1 | 0.55% | 180:1 | 16.74% |
Somewhat intuitively, the smaller the odds of winning, the higher the potential payout. Therefore, when planning your bets, you need to find a balance between the two that is suitable for your budget. You need to try to reduce the house edge while ensuring that the potential returns are attractive and worth playing for.
There is one betting system that has become extremely popular with advanced Sic Bo players. It required placing a bet of 3 currency units (e.g. €3) on 9 and 2 units (e.g. €2) on double 1, 5 and 6. Alternatively, you can bet three units on 12 and 2 units on double 1, 2 and 6. In both situations, the combination bets will provide a payout of 24 units if 9 or 12 wins and the same amount if the double bet wins.
High Roller Betting Strategies
If you are a high roller, then there are some Sic Bo strategies that are particularly well suited to your style of play. The strategies are based upon the principle of winning more than one bet from the same result. It can be achieved if you bet on a total of 8 or 13 using doubles and combinations and it gives you the chance to win three times from the same round.
A bet on a total 8 does not win if the dice total consists of a double 4, 5 or 6, as the total would be higher than 8. However, you can win on a total of 8 from a double 1, 2 or 5. An 8 total may also contain a combination of 2 and 3.
Therefore, if you are to bet on 8, you can put 3 units on a total of 8 and 2 units on a double 1, 2 and 3. This is a total bet of 11 units and if 8 wins, then you will win 27 units, if a double wins you will win 22 units, and if the combination wins then you win 12 units.
If you want to bet on 13, then bet 3 units on a total of 13 and 2 units on double 4, 5, and 6. At the same time, bet 2 units on a combination of 4 and 5 to cover the chance of double 4 and 5. This means that you will have bet 11 units. You would win 27 units if 13 wins, 22 units if a double wins and 12 units if the combination wins.
Essentially, whether you choose to bet on 8 or 13, there is a potential return of 61 units on an 11 unit bet.
